Netflix Not Working? How to Fix Common Netflix Problems

Updated March 2026 · 12 min read

Quick Navigation

Netflix is one of the world's most popular streaming services, but playback issues, error codes, and loading problems are common. This guide covers every major Netflix problem and how to fix it across all devices.

Fix 1: Netflix Not Loading or Opening

First steps

  1. Check status.netflix.com to confirm Netflix is not down.
  2. Test your internet speed at fast.com (Netflix's own speed tester). You need at least 3 Mbps for SD or 15 Mbps for HD.
  3. Restart your router: unplug power for 30 seconds and plug back in.
  4. Force-close Netflix and reopen it.
  5. Restart your device.
  6. Try a different device to confirm whether the issue is account-wide or device-specific.

Fix 2: Netflix Buffering or Low Quality

Speed requirements

Fix buffering issues

  1. Connect via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi for a more stable connection.
  2. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router or use a 5 GHz band instead of 2.4 GHz.
  3. Pause the video and wait 30 seconds to let it buffer.
  4. Lower the streaming quality: Netflix Account → Playback Settings → change from Auto to a lower quality.
  5. Close other apps or devices on your network that are using bandwidth.
Tip: If Netflix is the only service that buffers while YouTube works fine, the issue may be with your ISP throttling Netflix traffic. Using a VPN can sometimes help confirm this.

Fix 3: Netflix Black Screen

On PC / Browser

  1. Disable browser extensions, especially ad blockers and VPNs. Some block Netflix's DRM.
  2. Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
  3. Update your graphics driver: Device Manager → Display Adapters → Update Driver.
  4. Make sure hardware acceleration is enabled in your browser settings.

On TV / HDMI

  1. Unplug the HDMI cable and reconnect it firmly.
  2. Try a different HDMI port on your TV.
  3. The black screen may be an HDCP (HDMI copy protection) handshake failure — restart both the TV and streaming device simultaneously.
  4. If using a capture card or HDMI splitter, this can block HDCP — connect directly.
