Phone Water Damage? What to Do Immediately

Dropped your phone in water? Act fast! These critical steps in the first few minutes can mean the difference between saving your phone and permanent damage.
Quick Tip: The faster you act, the better your chances of saving your phone. Time is critical!

Immediate Actions (Do These First!)

✅ DO:
  1. Get it out of the water immediately — Every second counts!
  2. Turn it off right away — Power off completely. Don't try to check if it works.
  3. Remove the case — This allows water to escape from the edges.
  4. Remove SIM card and tray — Use the SIM ejector tool or paperclip.
  5. Remove any attached accessories — Headphones, cables, etc.
  6. Pat dry with a soft cloth — Gently wipe all exterior surfaces.
❌ DON'T:

How to Dry Your Phone

Method 1: Rice (Not Recommended)

While commonly suggested, rice is not the best option. It doesn't absorb moisture effectively and can leave dust inside your phone.

Method 2: Silica Gel Packets (Best)

This is the recommended method. Silica gel packets (like those from shoe boxes or electronics) are much more effective at absorbing moisture.

  1. Place your phone in an airtight container or zip-lock bag
  2. Surround it completely with silica gel packets
  3. Seal the container
  4. Leave it for at least 48-72 hours (longer is better)
  5. Don't open the container to check — each time lets in moisture

Method 3: Professional Drying

If available, use a professional phone drying service or vacuum chamber. These are the most effective methods.

Signs of Water Damage

How Long to Wait?

Minimum: 24-48 hours

Recommended: 72 hours (3 days) or longer

The longer you wait, the more likely all moisture will evaporate. If possible, wait a full week before turning on your phone.

After Your Phone Dries

  1. Reinsert the SIM card
  2. Try turning it on
  3. If it doesn't turn on, try charging for 30 minutes
  4. Test all functions: screen, speakers, cameras, charging
  5. If anything doesn't work, you may need repair or replacement
