Instagram Not Opening? Here's How to Fix It

Step 1 — Force-Close Instagram Completely

Make sure Instagram is fully closed, not just minimized:

• On iPhone with Face ID: Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause in the middle of the screen → find Instagram preview → swipe up on it to close
• On iPhone with Home button: Double-click the Home button → find Instagram → swipe up to close
• On Android: Swipe up from the bottom and hold to open recent apps → find Instagram → swipe it away. Alternatively: go to Settings → Apps → Instagram → Force Stop

Wait at least 10 seconds before trying to reopen Instagram. This gives your device time to fully clear the app from memory.

Step 2 — Restart Your Device

A full device restart resolves most temporary glitches that prevent apps from opening:

• On iPhone (Face ID): Press and hold the side button + either volume button → drag the power slider → wait 20 seconds → press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo

Step 5 — Check for iOS / Android System Updates

An outdated operating system can cause compatibility issues with Instagram:

• On iPhone: Go to Settings → General → Software Update → if an update is available, tap Download and Install. Make sure your iPhone is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi.
• On Android: Go to Settings → System → Software Update (or "System updates") → tap Check for updates → install any available updates. The exact path varies by manufacturer (Samsung, Pixel, etc.).

Step 6 — Update Instagram App

An outdated app version may have bugs that prevent it from opening:

1. Swipe down from the top-right (iPhone) or top (Android) to open Control Center

4. Tap Airplane Mode again to disable it
5. Wait 10 seconds for your network to reconnect

Will I lose my account? No — your account, photos, followers, and messages are stored on Instagram's servers, not on your device. After reinstalling, simply log in with your username and password. Your profile will be exactly as you left it.

Step 12 — Check Instagram Server Status

If nothing works, Instagram itself may be experiencing an outage:

• Visit Instagram.com in your browser — if it doesn't load there either, it's a server issue
• Check Downdetector for Instagram for real-time outage reports
• Search "Instagram down" on Twitter/X to see if others are reporting the same issue
• Visit IsItDownRightNow for server status

If Instagram is down, the only option is to wait. Most outages are resolved within a few hours.

Method 1 — In-App Reporting

If you can open Instagram on another device or in a browser, report the issue from there:

1. Go to your profile
2. Tap the ☰ menu (top right) → Settings and Privacy
3. Scroll down and tap Help
4. Select Report a Problem
