iCloud Not Syncing? How to Fix It
Updated March 2026 · Covers iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows
1. Quick First Checks
Run through these basics first
- Check Apple's system status at appleid.apple.com/status or apple.com/support/systemstatus — all iCloud services should show a green indicator.
- Ensure you're on Wi-Fi (iCloud Photos and Drive won't sync on cellular data by default).
- Turn off Low Power Mode: Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode (off). This feature throttles iCloud sync.
- Check the date & time: Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically (on). Wrong time breaks iCloud authentication.
- Restart your iPhone/iPad: power off and on again.
2. iCloud Photos Not Syncing
iPhone / iPad
- Go to Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Photos.
- Make sure iCloud Photos is toggled ON.
- Open the Photos app → scroll to the bottom — you should see a sync status bar. Wait for it to complete.
- If paused, tap "Resume". If it's been paused more than an hour on Wi-Fi, toggle iCloud Photos off and back on.
Mac
- Open the Photos app → click the status bar at the bottom. It should say "Uploading X items" or "Up to Date".
- If it says "Paused", choose Photos → Settings → iCloud and click Resume.
- Ensure your Mac is plugged in — macOS may pause uploads on battery.
iPhone / iPad
Enable iCloud Contacts and Notes
- Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Show All.
- Toggle Contacts ON (and Notes if you use iCloud Notes).
- If the toggle is already on, try turning it off → keep on my device (or merge) → wait 30 seconds → turn back on.
Tip: If contacts appear duplicated after re-enabling, go to icloud.com → Contacts → select duplicates → Delete. Then merge any remaining duplicates using Settings → Contacts → Merge Contacts (iOS 16+).
4. iCloud Drive Not Updating
- Open the Files app on iPhone → tap the three-dot menu → Refresh.
- On Mac, open Finder → iCloud Drive → right-click → Get Info to see sync status. If stuck, sign out and back in.
- Check that iCloud Drive is enabled: Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Drive → toggle ON.
5. iCloud Not Syncing on Mac
Fix iCloud sync on macOS
- Open System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud (macOS Ventura or later) or System Preferences → Apple ID.
- Check which services have their checkboxes ticked. Tick any that should be syncing.
- If the iCloud Drive shows a spinning wheel in Finder, quit Finder (Option + right-click Finder → Relaunch) and reopen.
- Sign out of iCloud: System Settings → Apple ID → Sign Out. Choose to keep local copies of iCloud data. Then sign back in.
6. iCloud Not Syncing on Windows
- Open iCloud for Windows from the Start menu. Ensure all services you need are checked and the app shows "iCloud Drive is up to date".
- Update iCloud for Windows to the latest version in the Microsoft Store.
- Restart the iCloud service: open Task Manager → Details tab → find iCloudServices.exe → End Task → reopen iCloud for Windows.
- Ensure Windows Defender or your antivirus isn't blocking iCloud — add an exception for the iCloud folder if needed.
7. Sign Out and Back In to iCloud (Full Reset)
Force iCloud to re-establish sync
- On iPhone/iPad: Settings → [Your Name] → scroll down → Sign Out. Keep a local copy when prompted.
- Wait 60 seconds, then: Settings → Sign In → enter your Apple ID.
- Re-enable iCloud services: Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → turn on each service you use.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and allow time for initial sync (can take 15–60 minutes for large libraries).
Warning: Signing out of iCloud does NOT delete your iCloud data — it's safely stored in the cloud. Your data will re-download after you sign back in.
